Diagnosis of Narcolepsy
Lee Ju-Hun

Abstract
Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder, which is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) that is typically associated with cataplexy and other REM sleep phenomenon such as sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucination. Narcolepsy is distinguished into three different entities, narcolepsy with cataplexy, narcolepsy without cataplexy, and narcolepsy due to medical condition. Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) following overnight polysomnography is s standard method for evaluating EDS and plays essential role in the diagnosis of narcolepsy. However, to provide a valid assessment of sleepiness or narcolepsy, the MSLT should be performed under appropriate condition using a qualified recording procedure. In this article, current diagnostic criteria of narcolepsy and recommended recording methods for reliable MSLT will be summarized.
